Nashville is the capital of Tennessee and, with 689,447 residents at the 2020 census, the state's most populous city. Since 1963 it has been governed jointly with Davidson County as a single metropolitan government, so the city limits and the county line are the same thing and a 40-seat Metro Council runs both. It covers 527.9 square miles on the Cumberland River, rising from 385 feet at the water to 1,163 feet at Radnor Lake.

The settlement began in 1779 as Fort Nashborough, built by a party under Judge Richard Henderson at a salt lick on the river, and took its name from the Revolutionary War general Francis Nash.

The "Music City" tag came from a WSM radio announcer, David Cobb, ad-libbing it on air in 1950, and it stuck because the industry is genuinely headquartered here rather than merely visiting: the Grand Ole Opry has been running since 1925, and the Ryman Auditorium, the record labels and the publishing houses are all in town. The wider economy leans just as heavily on healthcare, publishing, banking, automotive and technology. Vanderbilt University is here, and Centennial Park holds a full-scale replica of the Parthenon.
